The new branch resulted from a merger between the Zoo and Aquarium Association (also known as ARAZPA) and the Queensland Wildlife Parks Association (QWPA). In 2002, the QWPA membership voted to disband as a separate organisation and become the ARAZPA Queensland Branch (ARAZPAQ), or now known as the Zoo and Aquarium Association Queensland Branch. This represents a significant step towards the vision of a single representative zoo and aquarium body for the region.
The current Association Queensland Branch Management Committee is:
- President - Al Mucci, Dreamworld
- Vice President - Michael O'Brien, Cairns Tropical Zoo
- Secretary - Kelsey Mostyn, Australia Zoo
- Treasurer - Matt Hingley, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
- Committee Member - Jenny Jattke, Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve
- Committee Member - Martin Page, Ipswich Nature Centre
The agreement recognises the separate function of the Queensland Species Management Program (QSMP), which will continue to serve Queensland members (both full institutional and otherwise).
