Primate TAG

TAG Convenor: Amanda Embury, Melbourne Zoo

The Australasian Primate TAG covers all taxa in the order Primates. Currently represented in the region, or in the plans of institutions in the region, are the following families:

  • Chimpanzee

    Lemuridae - lemurs

  • Loridae - lorises
  • Callitrichidae - tamarins, marmosets
  • Cebidae - spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchins
  • Cercopithecidae - guenons, macaques, baboons, leaf-monkeys
  • Hylobatidae - gibbons
  • Hominidae - great apes

Two of the biggest issues for this TAG are:

  • Management of socially complex species
  • Importation of unrelated founder animals into the Australasian captive population
