ARAZPA was established in 1990 to link zoos and aquariums in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific in a cooperative regional network for wildlife conservation. The Association has over 90 zoos, aquariums and native fauna parks as members. The membership cares for more than 82,000 specimens of over 2,000 species, with all institutions working together to protect and conserve the world’s wildlife.
The purpose of this role is to provide support and scientific advice on population management and conservation science to the Association’s committees; and to manage the Captive Conservation Programs of the industry in order to ensure the sustainability of captive populations and that the industry fulfils a critical role in fauna conservation and research.
The Board has recently appointed a new Executive Director who is building on his existing team to meet the growing needs of the industry and conservation in general. The position will form part of the senior management team and will be expected to make a significant contribution to the overall change program of the Association. The position will have considerable autonomy and will suit someone who has substantial passion and drive to make a tangible and practical difference.
- Manage the Australasian Species Management Program, including native species programs in New Zealand and Australia.
- Develop and maintain a knowledge management system for conservation and research programs.
- Develop and maintain conservation and research networks within the industry.
- Experience in population biology or small population management with a view to providing specific expert advice to the Association and its committees.
- Demonstrated practical project management skills, particularly managing resources in a matrix environment.
- An understanding of the principles of in situ and ex situ fauna conservation work, with a capacity to build the organisation’s knowledge base in this area.
- An understanding of Knowledge Management Systems
- Well developed and professional inter-personal skills and the demonstrated capacity to build and maintain partnerships with member institutions and internal committees.
- Well developed writing and briefing skills.
- Ability to work on own initiative, given minimal direction, to meet the strategic intent of the organisation.
- Comfortable with and able to drive organisational change.
- Team supervisory skills.
- Ability to provide input in to the Association’s management team as well as specific expert scientific advice to the Association.
- Sound scientific grounding in biology supported with post graduate qualifications.
- Knowledge of the life sciences work of zoos and aquariums in Australia and New Zealand.
- An understanding or ability to readily assimilate the research work of the industry
The position is permanent full-time located in Mosman, Sydney. The salary package is AU$70 - 80,000 pa plus superannuation.
