Plankton Trawl

Education - Plankton TrawlARAZPA Organisation: Sea World.

Experience Title: Plankton Trawl.

Experience Synopsis: The class boards a Sea World vessel to conduct a Plankton Trawl while cruising the Broadwater. The plankton net is lowered into the water and trawled behind the boat. A sample from the trawl is placed in a large viewing container and viewed with the naked eye, students see movement but not very much definition. The sample is then decanted into smaller sealable vials and distributed to students with a hand held microscope to give them a better understanding of the diversity within the sample. Finally the sample is viewed with an electronic microscope through a TV monitor and individual animals or plant are identified then the findings are discussed. On return to Sea World, later in the day, the Oceanarium educational presentation is attended by the students.
