Adelaide Zoo
Planetkeeper is a program that involves students gaining knowledge and skills required for them to become involved in ‘action’ for the conservation of Threatened Species. The program focuses on tigers, Sun bears and orang-utans, with students learning about aspects of their chosen animal’s conservation. Students have a lesson with an Education Officer and go Behind the Scenes with a Keeper during their visit to the Zoo. Students are encouraged to raise awareness about the plight of the species chosen and raise much needed funds when they get back to School. These funds are sent to Organisations like the ARAZPA Wildlife Conservation Fund (21st Century Tiger) and Save the Tiger Fund, Animals Asia and the Free the Bears Fund and the Australian Orang-utan Project for in situ conservation.
Tuesday night ZooSnooze also comes under the Planetkeeper umbrella, whereby teachers and students are able to choose the tiger, orang-utan or Sun bear as their focus animal. Apart from the sleepover activities, this Program includes lessons about the plight and conservation of the focus animal, it has the children making behavioural enrichment items to be placed in the enclosure and they get to visit the animal’s ‘Off Limits’ areas during their stay at the Zoo. Upon their return to School, students are encouraged to raise awareness and fundraise as happens for the Day Visit program.
Reception – Year 12 Students (five through to seventeen year olds) for the Day Visit Program and Year 3 – Year 7 for the ZooSnooze.
The education experience is in two parts. The first part is a 45 minute lesson with an Education Officer and the second part is a Behind the Scenes tour of the chosen animals area.
