Auckland Zoo
Kiwi's Eggs Are Missing is a program led by Fairy Clare (an Early Childhood Education specialist). With the help of the group of children, Fairy Clare follows a trail through the Zoo, trying to find the culprit (with the aid of some of the Zoo animals they meet along the way and a few 'character' animals as well). Much discussion ensures as to who or what could be impacting on kiwi and other native species.
When they finally track him/her down they discover it's 'Ratty'. (Ratty is just about to make an omelette out of a Kiwi egg). The children then have to decide whether they want to keep Ratty around. Inevitably the children decide they don't, and after a sound scolding Ratty is put on a boat and sent away. The children are introduced to both native species and the concept of introduced predators and their impact. While Ratty isn't killed, there is discussion about the importance of not having introduced predators, including their own dogs and cats, in bush areas.
Children (and accompanying adults) involved in Early Childhood Education.
The program is offered twice a day over predetermined three week periods.
Group cost; maximum of 45 under five year olds (no minimum) and up to eight adults = NZ$250.00 extra adults NZ$12.00 each.
The program costs NZ$3000 to develop the storyline, have costumes/props designed and some rehearsal time.
Direct mail out to ECE organisations, articles in local newspapers, advertisement in ECE newsletter. Fairy Clare is a very well known and respected environmental educator for younger children and the media were keen to profile the program.
Two actors, two dedicated volunteers (per session) and one Zoo Education Officer.
The program was originally set up with money donated by a private individual.
Fairy Clare supplied her own resources which were built into the initial set up costs.
Feedback sought from participating teachers/coordinators. All responses in relation to the actual program are very positive. There was some resistance to price as this market (children under the age of five) is generally free.
While the program was cost effective, it is not one we could use to generate a profit in this particular format.
