Habitat Detectives

Habitat DetectivesARAZPA Organisation: Werribee Open Range Zoo

Experience Synopsis: Habitat Detectives inspires children to connect with wildlife by encouraging them to look more closely at the environment that surrounds them and begin to develop an appreciation of the natural beauty and diversity that exists within habitats like grasslands. The program introduces the concept of habitats as homes for wildlife and the need for us to take care of the natural world around us.

Audience: Prep – Grade 2.

Duration: 50 minute Discover Session.

Cost per participant: $12.50 per student

Set Up Costs: Minimal set-up costs were required other than staff time and approximately $100 went in to the development of ‘habitat lanyards’.

How the experience is marketed: This experience is not heavily marketed. Its popularity reflects word-of –mouth recommendations. All Discovery and Learning programs are promoted on our website at www.zoo.org.au/education.

Staffing requirements: Requires one staff member to run the session and develop the teacher notes.

Links and Partners: One of the beautiful things about this program is its simplicity. It was based on the philosophy ‘before you can ask children to save the earth, first we must teach them to love it’. A core part of the program is therefore geared towards exploration as students get out and about and explore patches of habitat. The only partner you will need to ensure that the program runs successfully is the support of your Horticulture department so that they can identify vegetation (and a decent sized patch) suitable for this sort of exploration.

Resources to successfully run the class: One educator and a class set of ‘habitat lanyards’. Each lanyard has a colour swatch card attached and a picture of an animal that they would expect to find living within the habitat that you take the children to. For the second half of the session students visit the discovery centre and meet some grassland species as we discuss the types of clues that each creature would leave behind.

How class is evaluated: We rely on teacher evaluation forms to be returned after each session.
