Frilly's Party

ARAZPA Organisation: Territory Wildlife Park

Experience Synopsis: Students are introduced to Top End native animals by helping "Frilly" the Frilled-neck Lizard to organise his party. Students learn about animal feeding habits, basic food chains and daily animal activity patterns by investigating what food is required, when the party is to be held and seating the party guests.

Audience: Early Childhood – Lower Primary.

Duration: The program can be used to develop a unit of work that could cover several weeks with both pre-visit and post-visit activities.

The activities in the Territory Wildlife Park last an average of three hours comprising of:

  • ½ hour introduction by Education Officer with teacher and students
  • two hours for students to travel around Park and visit exhibits
  • ½ hour discussion and wrap up with Education Officer.

Cost per Participant: as per normal student entry AU$3.60.

Set-up Costs: No financial outlay as yet – just the use of computer, digital camera, printer and laminator.

How the Experience is Marketed: As this is a new program, a flyer will be sent to all preschools and primary schools in week nine of Term four 2002. Another flyer will be sent out in week two of Term one 2003. This will attract both the teachers who program over the Christmas break as well as newly recruited teachers to the district. Early in Term one 2003 we will hold an official launch of the program.

Staffing: One Education Officer for 1 ½ hours:

  • ½ hour preparation
  • ½ hour introduction
  • ½ hour wrap up.

Resources: The program is developed as a booklet that will provide all material for a unit of work, or stand alone activities. This includes black line masters, NT Curriculum Framework links, lists of books (fiction and non-fiction/reference), web sites and Australian animal songs.

The booklet aims to assist the teachers and other supervisors on the day. It includes information such as where to find "their" animal, what it eats both in the wild and in captivity as well as photos of wild and captive food items.

Evaluation: Evaluation is invited by teachers on:

  • presentation at Territory Wildlife Park on the day of visit;
  • at end of school Terms on effectiveness of Territory Wildlife Park experience (visit and support materials).
