The sanctuary has over 80 years of experience and 130 koalas, and is situated in a delightful bushland setting on the edge of the Brisbane River at Fig Tree Pocket.
When you come to Lone Pine you can enjoy our Aussie wildlife at your own pace, and you can also come along to the free public shows every day of the year. In our 5 acre Kangaroo Reserve, 130 kanagaroos and wallabies wander freely and rest under the gum trees, and they are happy for you to feed them at any time during the day. We also have special visits from a flock of wild Rainbow lorikeets twice daily – visitors can hand-feed these parrots and watch their colourful antics from close up.
We give you a slice of Aussie outback farm life with Brisbane’s only Sheep Dog Show. The award-winning sheep dog handlers and their loyal dogs demonstrate their amazing sheep mustering skills at shows three times a day – learn about “Backing and Barking” Dogs, “Yard Dogs”, and their instinctive herding abilities.
There is also the Bird of Prey Free Flight Show, which features some beautiful Australian raptors. Watch 'Omega' the Wedge-tailed Eagle, 'Illuka' the White-bellied Sea-eagle, and the barn owls and barking owls as they soar freely in the skies, demonstrating their flight patterns and hunting abilities. You can have your photo taken holding one of these impressive birds straight after the show.
Of course, the most popular animal encounter is still the irresistible koala hug. You can cuddle a koala at anytime of the day and have your souvenir photo taken. Our Wildlife Officers will be able to tell you the name, looks and personality of the koala that you are cuddling, so make sure you ask all about your new friend.
You can even hold a snake or a baby crocodile and have your photo taken, if you’re brave enough! You will also encounter a large variety of wildlife including wombats, birds, dingoes, echidnas and more, in beautiful natural settings. It’s the Australian wildlife experience not to be missed.
The latest addition to the Lone Pine family is two young Northen Quolls. These small meat-eating marsupials arrived just in time for Australia Day. The Sanctuary is planning to breed the quolls, which are currently threatened in the wild by the cane toad population.
If you need a rest from all these awe-inspiring experiences, you can get comfortable in the easy chairs under the eucalypts in the Kangaroo Reserve. Or, unwind and have a capuccino in the “Koala Forest” enclosure, surrounded by 40 koalas! Home to cute female koalas such as 'Donatella' and 'Crumpet', the Koala Forest has a spacious courtyard where you can dine, or just relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Come to Lone Pine in style on the heritage-listed boat, the Mirmar. It arrives at Lone Pine at 11.30 a.m. and departs for the city again at 1.30 p.m. (www.mirimar.com)
