Taronga Zoo
Experience Synopsis: This is an extension of Taronga Zoo’s Zoomobile program offered in partnership with the Australian Museum (Sydney) and the Royal Botanic Gardens (NSW). This program specifically targets a senior school biology topic that covers plant and animal evolution diversity and adaptation as well as landform change over time in an Australian context.
Students experience several workshops in one day delivered by education staff from the three institutions. For the plant and animal evolution diversity and adaptation workshops Education Officers use living examples with reference to ancient plant and animal forms and the changing Australian environment.
Year 11 Senior Biology.
Whole day workshop. Programs are conducted at Australian Museum and Royal Botanic Gardens (one program at the two venues) and at the other Botanic Gardens sites at Mt Tomah and Mt Annan.
AUD$14.30 per student for the workshop.
This program was minimal. Museum exhibit and Botanic Gardens specimen material were already existing. There were no set up costs for Zoomobile for this program.
As a joint program, the Australian Museum nominated itself to incorporate paid print advertising (1/2 page ads in several publications) with other education programs. Royal Botanic Gardens and the Zoo Education Centre produced information as part of in-house advertising.
One Education Officer per institution teaching four workshops per day.
Taronga Zoo Education Centre, Royal Botanic Gardens Community Education Service (Sydney: Mt Tomah and Mt Annan) and Australian Museum.
Existing living and non-living resources (plants, animals, fossils, field survey tools).
Written evaluation sheets are completed by teachers from participating schools.
The program is offered at times of the year to coincide with the teaching of the unit in curriculum order.
