Rainforest Habitat (Lae).
Morobe Province Primary School Environmental Learning Program.
Prior to this program, environmental education was not available to students until mid secondary school level. As many students leave school before reaching secondary school they were not receiving any environmental education before returning home to their village where they were then expected to make important decisions regarding the future of their environment, eg whether or not to allow in foreign logging companies etc. Now at least they receive a balanced look at the pros and cons of such a move.
Morobe Province Provincial Primary School teachers and students.
Ongoing, the program is in its fifth year of operation.
Nil - sometimes schools give a donation towards buying animal food for the zoo animals.
Initially a grant of 130,000 Kina was secured from the New Zealand High Commission over three years to conduct the teacher training courses at The Rainforest Habitat. Now the training courses are funded by Research Conservation Fund (RCF) with Aus Aid money. BP PNG has been the sponsor of school visits since the program started.
It isn’t. Morobe Provincial Government is contacted when a teacher training course is on and they give us teacher names and contact them to come into The Rainforest Habitat (RFH) for the week-long course. We organize payment for all associated costs. School children visits are ongoing on any Wednesday or Thursday and are free for teachers and students. These are sponsored by BP PNG and cost them three Kina each (AU$1.20 each) – maximum of 4,000 school visits per year after which we still let them come in for free. Teachers are told they can come into the RFH with their students after making an appointment to do so. It also passes by word of mouth from school to school and teacher to teacher.
In the past teacher trainers came from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS ), now there are trained PNG teacher trainers from RCF (Research and Conservation Foundation) in Goroka (supported by WCS) facilitate the training. School children are given a conducted tour by RFH staff.
