Environmental Education Activity Kits

ARAZPA Organisation: Healesville Sanctuary

Experience Synopsis: The Environmental Education Activity Kits are designed to assist Early Childhood and Primary School educators to develop an awareness and appreciation of Australian wildlife and the environment through a variety of stimulating ‘hands-on’ activities. The kits can be used to provide lead-in or follow-up activities in conjunction with a Sanctuary excursion and education session with animal contact, or used independently. Depending on the kit theme, the kits may contain: animal artifacts, foam animal shapes, music tapes, hand and finger puppets, animal toys, animal felt shapes, teacher resources book, animal threading shapes, puzzles, videos, CD roms, books, bug viewers, and games.

Kit themes include:

  • Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails Kits (Kindergarten)
  • Frog Kit (Kindergarten to Year Two)
  • Endangered Animals (Year Three to Year Four

Audience: Kindergarten to Year Four, depending on kit theme.


Duration: Kit loan times are for four weeks.


Cost per Participant: AU$40.00 per kit plus one-way postage. The cheque is to be paid before delivery.


Set-up Costs: Each kit contains between AU$400 - $600 worth of goods which are packed in a large, sturdy plastic crates.


Marketing: Website, school mailouts and conference presentations.


Staffing: An Education Officer researches target themes for year levels and collates suitable materials. An Administration Assistant looks after the bookings and sends/receives/checks kit with each booking.


Links and Partners: Early Childhood and Primary School educators.


Resources: A wide variety of resources which include ABC shops, Australian Geographic shops, The Gould League/Dept of Natural Resources and Environment/educational book suppliers. All groups are drawn upon to put together a kit. Kit themes and contents are based on both guidelines from the Victorian Department of Education and Training CSF (Curriculum and Standards Frameworks) and the Environmental Education in Early Childhood organisation.


Evaluation: An evaluation form is sent with each kit. Approximately 30% are completed, all with positive feedback. Bookings are usually full throughout the year with many repeat customers.


Additional Comments: Borrowers are respectfully asked to replace/reimburse missing or damaged items (an infrequent occurrence). A list itemising and costing the kit contents is sent with each kit to show borrowers the monetary value of the kit.
