Banner Competition

Banner CompetitionARAZPA Organisation: Taronga Zoo

Experience Synopsis: Taronga Zoo initiated the state-wide Banner Competition to schools in 1997 and it has become a successful and well supported annual event until 2002. Each year the competition had a specific theme which student’s artistically used to focus their designs on. From the thousands of entries received from students, twenty five highly commended designs were selected and the one winning design was reproduced into large vinyl banners and displayed across Taronga Zoo. The banners were colourful, vibrant and added an aspect of fun to the zoo grounds! A Banner Competition Presentation Ceremony was held to acknowledge the amazingly talented artists and announce the winning design. All 26 outstanding designs were showcased on the Zoo’s website.

Audience: Kindergarten to Year 12.

Duration: The program extends over the school year.

Cost per Participant: No cost to enter the competition.

Set-up Costs: Following is an estimated breakdown of the costs:

  • Competition flyer (designed and printed) AU$700.00
  • Certificates (designed and printed) and prizes AU$300.00
  • Banner production (80 banners) AU$8,000.00
  • Presentation ceremony AU$1000

Total - approximately AU$10,000.00

How the Experience is marketed: A flyer was sent to every state, independent and catholic school in the state. A flyer was also personally addressed to every teacher who previously had entered their students in the competition. We also promoted the competition on the Zoo’s website.

Staffing requirements: Two Zoo Educators to coordinate and deliver the competition.

Links and Partners: Over the years the theme of the competition related to an animal exhibit or Zoo promotion. For example, Coca-Cola are sponsors of the Chimpanzee exhibit, therefore the theme of the competition in 2002 was Chimpanzees and sponsorship money covered all costs. Coca-Cola had their logo printed on the banners and on all printed materials. The first year of competition the theme was penguins, then it was nocturnal animals, tigers, frogs, the olympic mascots and chimpanzees. Every year the amount of entries we receive increases with the highest being over 4500 entries.

Resources to successfully run the class: N/A

Evaluation: There is no formal evaluation of the program.

Comments:
Entries were counted and registered on arrival and returned to the students with their certificates at the completion of the competition. The two Zoo Educators who coordinated the competition culled the entries for final judging. The panel for final judging usually consisted of educators, marketing staff, keeping staff, an artist and sponsors - everyone bringing experience from their own field of expertise. It was a fun competition and the banners looked magnificent when displayed across the Zoo grounds!
