The Aquatic TAG covers a wide variety of aquatic taxa, including the following taxonomic groups:

  • fish
  • sharks and rays
  • seahorses
  • eels
  • other freshwater and marine life, such as corals and other aquatic invertebrates

Currently there is one managed program overseen by the TAG - a Husbandry Research Program for the Grey Nurse Shark, Carcharias taurus. The east coast population of Grey Nurse Shark is listed as critically endangered, and the west coast population is listed as vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.  In June 2002, the Department of Environment and Heritage (then known as Environment Australia) released its Recovery Plan for the Grey Nurse Shark (Carcharias taurus) in Australia, and one of the prescribed actions from the Plan is for aquaria to develop management plans for the keeping of Grey Nurse Sharks. Currently the Aquatic TAG is developing a captive management plan for this species.

Information regarding Aquatic TAG managed programs, including program outlines, studbooks, annual report and recommendations, and captive management plans may be viewed in the Members' section of the website.
