ASMP Species Program Positions

The ASMP relies on a network of voluntary position holders appointed from staff of member zoos for its success.

The ASMP offers professional development opportunities for staff of ARAZPA member institutions, in a number of species management roles:

  • TAG Convenor
  • Species Coordinator
  • Studbook Keeper
  • Species Contact
  • Husbandry Program Coordinator

These positions are outlined below

Taxon Advisory Group Convenor
TAG Convenors are responsible for coordinating the production of recommendation for a defined groups of species, usually an Order or Family. TAG Convenors also monitor and direct the activities of voluntary position holder for taxa covered by the TAG.

Species Coordinator
Species coordinator responsibilities include:  maintaining a studbook, analysing the population annually, providing specimen recommendations to institutions on the basis of this analysis, reporting regularly to the ARAZPA office and coordinating any other areas of regional work required for the taxon.

Information in the studbook is analysed by the coordinator to provide a picture of the genetic and demographic status of the species in captive collections – whether new, unrelated bloodlines are needed to boost the population’s genetic health, whether enough animals are being born each year to maintain numbers at the required level and which animals should be paired to achieve the lowest levels of inbreeding and to promote the highest levels of gene diversity in the population. The coordinator uses this information to generate, annually, breeding and transfer recommendations for ARAZPA zoos and aquaria. Institutions then implement these recommendations, by moving and pairing animals as requested, reporting regularly to the coordinator on their progress.

Studbook Keeper
Studbook keepers are responsible for maintaining studbook data and for periodically reporting on this to the Taxon Advisory Group.

Some studbook keepers will be required to develop and implement a management strategy for the taxon involved. Once the stategy has been approved the studbook keeper is upgraded to the position of species coordinator.

Studbooks compiled by ASMP studbook keepers adhere to a common set of standards and conventions. These are laid out in a single document, entitled, "Managing Zoo Populations: compiling and analysing studbook data".

Species Contact
Position-holders are initially appointed to the position of Species Contact, while they develop the framework of a species program (husbandry research plan, studbook, population analysis and management plan, etc.) - the Program Outline. This details the rationale behind selection  of the species for regional attention and provides a workplan tailored to achieve the program's objectives. The workplan may include: a studbook, a population management plan, husbandry guidelines, a regional plan for cooperative acquisition, a review of conservation measures, a plan for a regional education program etc.

Husbandry Coordinator
Husbandry coordinators develop written husbandry and management guidelines for the target taxon. For some taxa this involves reviewing and documenting techniques that reflect regional standard practice. For others, where little is known, the work involves initial investigation and may require coordination or monitoring trial.
