The ASMP Committee monitors and directs the activities of the Australasian Species Management Program, reporting to, and implementing directives from the ARAZPA Board of Management. Responsibilities of the committee extend across all areas of policy, administration, reporting and publication relating to species programs and collection planning.
The committee comprises six members, including a chairperson. Committee members are appointed by the ARAZPA Board of Management for a three-year period. Each member must be able to bring to the ASMP Committee some combination of the following:
- directorial experience
- curatorial experience
- species management and/or collection planning experience
- knowledge of the international zoo community
- understanding of wildlife agency issues
The current members of the ASMP Committee are:
Stephen is a zoo director who reads and understands TAG Action Plans. He has been employed in zoos for over 27 years, much of it as keeper, curator and director in various British zoos. In 1997 he became curator at Auckland Zoo and then director in 2000. He left Auckland Zoo in May 2003 and has since carried out various consultancy tasks for Australasian zoos as well as being acting executive officer for ARAZPA for over three months in 2004. He is now director at Hamilton Zoo.
Stephen has extensive experience in the management of breeding programs, having held a number of studbook, coordinator and TAG positions in the UK as well as the position of EEP coordinator for black lemurs for a number of years. Within Australasia, he has been coordinator for Asiatic golden cat, TAG convenor for Perissodactyls & Proboscids and was a member of the ASMP committee whilst at Auckland Zoo.
Paul graduated from the University East Anglia [BSc Hons Ecology and Evolution] in 1977 and spent the next ten years birdwatching. He arrived in Australia after five years in Indonesia where he developed a particular interest in Indo-malayan birds.
He is now Curator of Birds and Herpetofauna at Taronga Zoo and holds the position of Taxonomy Specialist for the ASMP. Paul is the editor of Kukila, Bulletin of the Indonesian Ornithological Society, and a member of Birds Australia's Records Appraisal Committee and Taxonomic Committee.
Leif Cocks Leif has been working at Perth Zoo for more than 22 years, as a Keeper, Supervisor, Curator of Primates and since 2001 as Curator of Exotic Mammals. Other positions in Perth Zoo that Leif has held include Manager of Policy and Administration and Purchasing Officer. He entered the zoo with a Bachelor of Applied Science and through part-time study gained a Certificate III in Zoo Keeping, a Post Graduate Diploma in Natural Resources and a Masters of Science.
Other than his position on the ASMP Committee Leif is also the Artiodactyl TAG Convenor, the Primate TAG's Husbandry Advisor and the International Studbook Keeper and Species Coordinator for the Silvery Gibbon.
Outside of work Leif is the founder and President of the Australian Orangutan Project (AOP), Committee Member of the Australian Primate Society, a member of the Australian Committee for the UN's Great Ape Survival Program (GRASP) and an active member of the CBSG orangutan conservation workshops. Leif also assists Mogo Zoo with their Species Management and representation at ASMP TAG Meeting. However he spends most of his leave in Indonesia working on the AOP's orangutan conservation projects.
Amanda has worked at Zoos Victoria for over 20 years. She’s based at Melbourne Zoo where initially she worked as Animal Records Officer. During her career with Zoos Victoria Amanda has developed skills and expertise in many facets of zoo operations through working with the Curatorial Unit, Projects and Planning Unit, Business Development Unit, Interpretation team and she is now part of the Life Sciences Unit.
Her current role is Strategic Coordinator Life Sciences and amongst other things she’s involved with development of policies and procedures for life sciences. These diverse roles all contribute to exhibitory and animal management, including provision of animal welfare and delivery of visitor experience. Her background is in zoology, and she also holds a Diploma in Education and Graduate Certificate in Interpretation. These formal qualifications bring discipline in project development, animal behaviour and visitor experience and interpretation. Amanda has been an active participant in the ASMP, having held the position of TAG Convener for Primates for many years. She also maintains several studbooks and Species Coordinator positions. She’s keen to work with the ASMP Committee with a view to contributing to sustainable populations of program species within the region.
