ARAZPA Board of Management

The ARAZPA Board of Management is made up of nine individuals, including a President and Vice President. They are all elected for a two-year term at the Annual General Meeting, except for three positions which are appointed representatives (ASMP representative, Qld. Branch representative and New Zealand Branch representative). All standing Board members must be individual members of ARAZPA, as well as employed by a Full Institutional ARAZPA member.

 

Meet the ARAZPA Board:

Susan HuntPresident, Susan Hunt
Perth Zoo
Board Portfolio: Wildlife Conservation Fund and Ethics Committee

Susan is the Chief Executive of Perth Zoo and has worked at Perth Zoo since 2000. She is a member of the Species Survival Commission’s Conservation Breeding Specialist Group and through her role of CEO of Perth Zoo is active in the World Association of Zoos and Aquaria

Susan has a background in policy, planning and conservation strategy. She holds a Master of Arts from the University of Western Australia and an Honors degree from Murdoch University. She was awarded a graduate fellowship to the University of California (SC) in 1983-84 and was also a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Women’s Studies at the University of Toronto in 1989. Susan is the author of two books on Western Australian history. Prior to entering zoos, Susan worked in the Western Australian Government in indigenous affairs and intergovernment relations.

The priority for Susan in her role on the ARAZPA Board is to strengthen and build partnerships across Australasian zoos and aquaria, particularly in conservation programs. Over the last year Susan has been working to enhance understanding and actions to respond to the global amphibian crisis. Susan is also committed to building ARAZPA’s capacity in linking more effectively and coordinating our in-situ conservation efforts.

Guy CooperVice President, Guy Cooper
Taronga Conservation Society of Australia (Taronga and Taronga Western Plains Zoos)
 
Guy was first appointed to the Zoological Parks Board of NSW in 1991 and was Deputy Chairman from 1993 to 1998. His responsibilities at various times included chairing of the Finance and Marketing Committees as well as Board Member on the Internal Audit Committee. He was appointed to the position of Director and Chief Executive in 1998. 

Prior to this position, Guy Cooper was Chairman and Managing Director of S.C. Johnson Wax Pty. Australia and New Zealand, Director of Johnson Wax, Philippines, and Chairman and Director of Rotobic Pty. Ltd. Formerly with Unilever, his Marketing and General Management career with both S.C. Johnson and Unilever included postings in the USA, New Zealand, Japan and South Africa with wider geographic responsibilities linked to those appointments. 

In addition to other appointments he was a Board member and President of the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife during 1996 to 1998.

Guy is a founding Member of the International Rhino Foundation Board of Directors, the Blue Mountains Hotel School Advisory Board and a Girl Guides Ambassador.

Gary FryGary Fry
Alice Springs Desert Park
Gary Fry is the Manager of Alice Springs Desert Park. He has been in Alice Springs for seven years, both as Curator (Zoology), and as Manager for the last three years. His previous zoo work has been at Taronga Zoo, and Victoria’s Open Range Zoo. Gary has a Masters degree in wildlife management.


Gary has associated roles with zoos and wildlife including representing the Northern Territory Government on the Botanic Gardens of Australia New Zealand Council, the Council of Heads of Australian Botanic Gardens and the Olive Pink Botanic Garden Board of Trustees. He is committed to bringing the two fields of life sciences, zoology and botany, especially at an ex situ level, more closely together. He is especially committed to continuing to work closely with central Australian Aboriginal people.



Trevor LongTrevor Long
Sea World
Trevor commenced at Sea World in 1973 and holds the position of Director of Marine Sciences. He is responsible for the collaborative design of exhibits, management of the animals and all related issues, is administrator of the Sea World Research and Rescue Foundation, heads up the Sea World rescue team in association with government agencies and is Master of the Sea World research vessel.







Michael O'BrienMichael O'Brien
Cairns Tropical Zoo
Board Portfolio: ARAZPA Queensland Branch Representative, Accreditation and ARAZPA Wildlife Conservation Fund

Michael O'Brien joins the board as the ARAZPA Queensland Branch Representative. He has been employed at Cairns Tropical Zoo for twenty years. He commenced as a keeper in the Reptile Department during which time he participated in the Reptile TAG and for the last six years has overseen the zoo collection and its development, including joining ARAZPA as a Full Institutional Member.

Michael has been actively involved with the Queensland Wildlife Parks Association – now the ARAZPA Queensland Branch – in roles on the QSMP Committee, Standards Committee, and Management Committee and is currently President of the Queensland Branch. He is committed to ongoing industry improvement and as a result is enthusiastic about the implementation of Accreditation.

Lynn AndersonLynn Anderson
Orana Wildlife Trust
Board Portfolio: ARAZPA New Zealand Branch Representative

Lynn is the Chief Executive of the Orana Wildlife Trust. The Trust owns and operates Orana Wildlife Park, New Zealand’s only open range zoo specialising in endangered African and New Zealand native species, and Southern Encounter Aquarium & Kiwi House located in Cathedral Square, Christchurch. This year she will celebrate her tenth year of employment at the Trust.

Lynn is currently in her third two year term as Chairperson of the New Zealand Conservation Management Group (the New Zealand Branch of ARAZPA), and has now joined the ARAZPA Board as the New Zealand Membership Representative. She is an active Member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Lynn also contributes to the business community and is currently on the Board of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce (fourth one year term). She is an Associate Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management and a Member (and previous Committee Member) of the Institute of Directors. Lynn is also an Independent Professional Director on the Board of Target Pest Enterprises Limited, a company with branches throughout New Zealand.

Lynn offers an energetic approach, a strong “people” focus and her total commitment to helping ensure that ARAZPA not only continues to meet the needs of its members, but explores new avenues of service delivery and excellence in our ever changing and fluid operating environment.

Stephen StandleyStephen Standley
Hamilton Zoo
Board Portfolio: ASMP Committee Chair

Stephen is a zoo director who reads and understands TAG Action Plans. He has been employed in zoos for over 27 years, much of it as keeper, curator and director in various British zoos. In 1997 he became curator at Auckland Zoo and then director in 2000. He left Auckland Zoo in May 2003 and has since carried out various consultancy tasks for Australasian zoos as well as being acting executive officer for ARAZPA for over three months in 2004. He is now director at Hamilton Zoo.

Stephen has extensive experience in the management of breeding programs, having held a number of studbook, coordinator and TAG positions in the UK as well as the position of EEP coordinator for black lemurs for a number of years. Within Australasia, he has been coordinator for Asiatic golden cat, TAG convenor for Perissodactyls & Proboscids  and was a member of the ASMP committee whilst at Auckland Zoo.
